Cansu Tanrıkulu (1991, Ankara) is a singing multi-media artist, composer and improviser based in Berlin. She is one of the busiest young voices in the European Creative Music Scene releasing music (LowSwing Records, Out of Your Head Records, 99 Chants, Spitfire Audio) and leading/co-leading multiple bands including Piled Up (Lukas König, Mona Matbou Riahi, Nick Dunston, Arne Braun feat Marc Ribot), Tanrikulu/Nick Dunston /Joey Baron, Eonta (w. Carol McGonnell), Pep Talk (w. Korhan Erel), MeoW ( Jim Black, Dan Peter Sundland, Liz Kosack) & Kantoj de Fermiteco (w. Greg Cohen & Tobias Delius), Marmalsana (Maurice Louca, Tony Elieh, Burkhard Beins) & Interrupted (Kaan Bıyıkoğlu & Nick Dunston).
Her elastic singing, wide stylistic vocabulary and far reaching approach to melody and text-based improvisation made her an in-demand vocalist in multiple genres. She actively performs in renowned platforms of Europe and USA (Sonorities Festival (IE), Jazzfest Berlin, Unerhört Festival, Berghain, Rewire Festival, Leipziger Jazztage, Berliner Festspiele, A'larmé Festival, Köln Jazzwoche, Winterfest Köln, Roulette (NY), Saalfelden Jazzfestival etc) with her bands next to her side-person projects including Nick Dunston's SKULTURA (w. Eldar Tsalikov, Liz Kosack, Maria Portugal) & Colla Voce, James Banner’s USINE & Stine Janvin’s Chords for Calling, Max Andrzejewski's HÜTTE & guests, Mutual Mentorship for Musicians cohort member. Her compositional debut for theater was in 2021 for the play “Krampus” in Maxim Gorki Theater collaborating with Korhan Erel.
She is currently a Dozentin at the Jazz and Contemporary Music Department of Hochschule der Künste Bern (CH) alongside Jim Black, Andreas Schaerer, Django Bates, Colin Vallon, Patrice Moret, Ralph Alessi and Tom Arthurs. Her pedagogical experience consists of working with improvising ensembles in small and large scales, varied theme ensembles with compositional guidance, band coaching alongside vocal technique and performance work with Bachelor’s and Master’s students. Expanding her scope of projects as well as working as a recording/ performing artist for established international artists (incl. Nate Wooley' Seven Storey Mountain VI 2021, Anthony Braxton’s Sonic Genome in 2019).She is a recipient of SWR Jazzpreis 2024, Jazz Preis der Karl Hofer Gesellschaft for Soloist (2019), Elsa Neumann Stipendium - UdK/DAAD (2021) and nominee for Deutscher Jazz Preis (Voice) 2023. She has been selected to be a resident in Goethe Institut Tarabya co-curated Jazzfestival Bern 2025 and invited many projects to Bern including Emaskülatör (TUR). Besides music she also has a Cognitive Psychology Bachelor's Degree from Bilkent University (TUR).
